A message arrives, the crew is mustered, and the word is passed. We have been assigned to  US Coast Guard Squadron 3, part of Operation Market Time, operating off South Viet-Nam.

This is the voyage of the USCGC Androscoggin and her crew at war.

On 29 February 36 years ago, I watched a truly professional team of Coast Guardsmen in combat action.  According to COMNAVFORV, it was the most significant naval action of the Vietnam war. You not only taught the North Vietnamese Navy a lesson but our own Navy as well.  Both learned that the Coast Guard could fight.  That lesson for our Navy has favorably impacted and enhanced Navy/Coast Guard relations ever since.

Again, to all of you who brought such luster to the reputation of our Service, my thanks.  It was a professional privilege and a personal pleasure to have been your Commanding Officer.
