GENERAL NOTICES;
1. THE FOLLOWING IS A NOTE FROM THE CAPTAIN;
On 22 May, we were a part of the first amphibious
landing participated
in by a WHEC in the Viet Nam War. We received a final
SITREP on
the operation last night. There were 6 companies of
Regional/Popular
Force personnel
involved - a total of over 500 men.
They landed at
two locations, both covered by our gunfire, and
proceeded inland in
a pincer's movement. There was light enemy contact
but it was
quickly broken as the VC fled into the hills. The
troops were
extracted without difficulty about 1500 under cover of
a swift boat and
two VN PGM's.
The operation was smooth, efficient and proved without
doubt that a
WHEC can adequately cover landings of this size.
The
Navy was
most pleased with our performance and shore observers
classify
our gunfire as extremely accurate. Another "First"
for the ANDY!
Well Done!
